GHC MILKEN SCHOLAR AWARD WINNERS

Granada Hills Charter High School was the only Los Angeles-area school to have multiple winners of the prestigious Milken Scholar award, which are presented to college-bound seniors based on academic performance, community service, leadership and their demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles and persevere in the face of personal challenges. Julianna Avalos, who will attend UC San Diego for computer science, Daniel Guillen, who will be attending Stanford University and studying computer science and engineering; and Mohib Jafri, who will be attending Harvard and focusing on environmental studies, were among 13 Los Angeles scholarship winners. As winners, each will receive a $10,000 scholarship as well as ongoing career counseling, assistance in pursuing internships and community service opportunities and access to additional financial support for post-undergraduate work. "In the nearly three decades since Lori and I co-founded the Milken Scholars program, these leaders of tomorrow have consistently inspired us by their achievements, leadership and dedication to service," Milken Institute Chairman Mike Milken said when announcing the awards.
