PSAT

Dear Parents and Guardians:

We are pleased to offer the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) to all students in grades 9-11 on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. The PSAT is directly aligned to the SAT, and serves as an excellent opportunity for students to practice and receive feedback on the knowledge and skills that are essential for college and career readiness. GHCHS is one of the few schools that offers the PSAT to all students during school hours - and covers all fees associated with the test. While students in grade 9-11 are taking the PSAT, students in grade 12 will have the opportunity to participate in Senior Day at Lake Castaic.

While a small number of colleges have decided to place less emphasis on standardized tests, the vast majority of colleges require either the SAT or ACT as part of a student’s application. Many schools consider a student’s performance on these tests to be the second most important factor (after a student’s GPA) in their admissions decisions. We believe that with multiple opportunities to practice for these tests, students will earn higher scores and become stronger candidates for college admission.

Granada Hills Charter High School students have been very successful – each year GHCHS students score significantly higher on college entrance exams than their peers in neighboring schools, California, and worldwide.

By taking the PSAT, students have the opportunity to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program – a program that annually awards over $30 million in scholarships through partnerships with corporations and business organizations. This year, six GHCHS students earned the distinction of Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and over thirty students have been recognized as Commended Scholars.

Khan Academy has partnered with The College Board to develop a free, personalized practice program for the SAT – this is also an excellent resource to prepare for the PSAT. All GHCHS students can access this resource at Khan Academy SAT prep.

All students in grades 9-11 are expected to be present at school to take the exam. Absences on the PSAT testing day will be counted towards the absence policy just like any other school day. The school will follow a special bell schedule on the test day – all students should plan to report to their homeroom by 8:27 a.m. All students will be dismissed following the test at 11:40 a.m. Please click here for the bell schedule.

Senior Day Activities
Students in grade 12 will have the opportunity to participate in Senior Day, held at Lake Castaic. Tickets are available for sale at the GHCHS Student Store until September 28. Seniors participating in Senior Day are to check in at the main gym at 8:27 a.m. Seniors not participating in Senior Day are to report to Highlander Hall at 8:27 a.m. for SAT practice and Naviance activities.

We are very pleased to offer these experiences to our students and hope that all students will participate. Score reports will be distributed during homeroom when students return to school from winter break in January. Please contact the Office of Instruction at 818-360-2361 ext. 361 should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

David Bensinger
